Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences Company, has been awarded the Corporate Steward Award 2012 for its integrated Triple P approach to creating a sustainable business and shared value with all stakeholders. The prize was awarded by the US Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) at its 13th annual awards gala.

The award was presented to DSM on 6 December in Washington DC. In addition to DSM, the finalists for the Corporate Steward Award included IBM, Capital One and United Health Group. Winners in other award categories included Google, Qualcomm and WellPoint. Stephan Jordan, Executive Director of the US Chamber BCLC said: “In every case, the corporate citizenship of the winners shows the exceptional ability of business to innovate, solve problems and help people realize their potential.”

Past winners of the Corporate Steward Award include Kraft Foods, Intel, Microsoft and Merck. “Knowing the outstanding and valuable work undertaken by the other finalists, IBM, Capital One and United Health Group, it is immensely humbling and a true honor to have DSM announced as the 2012 winner of the Corporate Steward Award,” said Hugh Welsh, President DSM North America. “This award is a recognition of the passion, commitment and talent of DSM’s employees worldwide working every day to create better lives for people today and generations to come, and in doing so creating value for all of DSM’s stakeholders.”

As the leading producer of nutritional ingredients, including vitamins and micronutrients, DSM provides nutrition solutions to close vitamin intake gaps, improve lives and lower health care costs. DSM actively engages in global Public Private Partnerships, such as the long standing collaboration with the United Nations World Food Program, Partners in Food Solutions, Vitamin Angels and others to fight malnutrition. DSM is also one of the few private sector actors involved in UN’s Scaling-Up Nutrition initiative. This initiative received specific support from the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, a commitment by G-8 nations, African countries and private sector partners to lift 50 million people out of poverty over the next 10 years. DSM’s work in transforming its product portfolio to ECO+ products, efforts in reducing its energy usage, water usage and greenhouse gas emissions, focus on engagement with employees and improving inclusion and diversity and its integrated annual reporting practices were considered by an independent panel of judges who ultimately selected DSM as the 2012 Corporate Steward winner.
