Royal DSM, a global science-based company in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living, will operate on 100% renewable electricity throughout North America from the end of this year thanks to a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ørsted A/S. As a result, DSM is set to outpace its ambitious science-based target of achieving 75% of purchased electricity globally from renewable sources by 2030.
The PPA signed with Ørsted, a global leader in sustainable energy, will contribute to the financing of a new solar energy facility in Texas. This will ensure additional renewable electricity capacity of approximately 920,000 MWh for the US energy grid each year, equivalent to the needs of 100,000 homes, of which DSM will utilize a portion.
As a result, DSM will dramatically reduce its CO2 emissions by approximately 50,000 tons/year. It is DSM’s third such PPA in North America, following a wind power agreement with NextEra Energy Resources in 2017 and a solar power agreement with Origis Energy in 2020.
DSM is committed to sourcing 75% of its global electricity needs from renewable resources by 2030, and reaching 100% at the earliest possibility, as well as halving its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions between 2016 and 2030. DSM is also a member of RE100, a collaborative, global initiative uniting companies committed to 100% renewable power.
DSM’s sustainability information and disclosure is provided each year, audited under reasonable assurance, in DSM’s integrated annual report. The most recently published was for 2020.
